While we typically celebrate birthdays today with cake, time with family, and fun. The history of birthday parties was not always such a jolly occasion. Such is seen in Europe's history, thousands of years ago.
Originally, a person feared their approaching birthday. It was seen as a fearful experience because individuals thought bad spirits might damage you on this day.
Birthday parties were designed as a way to keep those spirits away by surrounding yourself with loved ones and buddies who typically brought small tokens and food to share.
Individuals would use noise makers to scare off any evil spirits that may be prowling around the house.
It remained in the mid lives that birthday parties began to take on a more celebratory state and the tone turned more positive. They were not yet prevalent amongst peasants. Many birthday parties were only celebrated by royalty or the very wealthy.
It wasn't up until reformation that the birthday celebration became a more typical event in England. Individuals then started to make cakes and treats for the birthday individual and would often tuck small fortune tokens into the cake for visitors.
It is thought that kids's birthday celebrations originated in Germany and was called Kinderfeste.
